Midweek 8/05/09
Story by Mike McNamara
Today we got to go to one of our crown jewels of New Hampshire, Lake Ossippe, up in God’s country. It was a beautiful day, but we all know when you get up past a certain elevation you are much closer to the rain. We had a perfect seven hours of sunshine and warm breezes but come 2:30 all hell breaks loose and it pours and it blows and it pours and it blows. Having it all start and stop within 30 minutes and then go right back to the same beautiful day that we started with, warm sunshine and warm breezes
Collecting the headlines today at Lake Ossippe a native to this water was Scott Leavitt. Not only did he win, he carries off the Triple Crown. Yes that’s right, the triple crown. He collects the win, the lunker smallface and lunker largemouth. Now that is a nice day on Lake Ossippe, or any lake. His five fish bag consisted of four very impressive smallmouth and of course our lunker largemouth at 5.85 and his lunker small face at 5.03. Scott started his day pretty much where he ended his day, right in front of us. Scott caught all of his smallmouth on top water, left his starting spot to go after his lunker largemouth, which obviously he found, to come back to finish his day right in front of his. Scott caught his largemouth on a jig. Great job. Good to see you. His winning bag was 17.57.
Coming in second place was Mike Vining. This young man has been in our winners circle a couple of times now and a true blue green fisherman. Mike talks to catching all five of his largemouth on a one ounce flippin jig. Targeting those largemouth, Mike has come across some interesting situations of late, and again this young man talks to seeing some big green fish still bedding in the north end of the lake in the marina. Amazing! Mike’s five largemouth weighed in at 13.92. See you at the next Midweek.
Coming in third was Steve Graham throwing the perfect Steve Graham jig. Steve had his limit by 11 am catching a couple of his fish early on top water to eventually cull out two of those fish to bring his third place bag to 13.83. Well done
Fourth place winner was Josh Lane. This young man was fishing very close to some structure in the river and talks to seeing some huge huge fish sitting in shallow water under a dock. He was absolutely keyed on catching them as a very young fisherman and his grandfather approached the dock throwing live night crawlers. So for Josh all he could do was to wave to the 15 – 20 smallies and move on to other docks. He came to the scale with 12.26.
In fifth place was Joe Perez, throwing that Steve Graham perfect jig. He came to the scale with five largemouth weighing in for 11.44. Well done.
Taking the coveted first loser’s pool, Ryan Richardson, with five largemouth with his big one anchoring his bag at 4.53. Ryan took the first loser’s pool with 10.45. Ryan caught all his fish on docks and pontoons using a Senko.
As this reporter glanced through the field, there was one standout and definitely noteworthy angler, Alan Denise’s grandson Tyler Spires. Tyler not only held lunker smallmouth for a very long period of time with 4.49 only to lose to a very impressive 5.43 smallie. What a meanie you are Scotty. Tyler was smiling pretty large because he kicked Pe’Pe’ butt. Now that is a great story to go back to school with. Thanks for coming to play Tyler.
